Terrain and Place

Terrain is characterized by the slope of the land and the geologic features of it. Together these features help identify places in a way people recognize. The Guejito is situated in the San Diego foothills with an elevation slightly above Ramona. It also shares some of the features of Ramona or Santa Ysabel and Lake Henshaw with broad mildly sloping valleys, rocky outcrops, and steeply sloping hillsides. These Terrains support wetlands, grasslands, expanses of oaks, chaparral, coastal sage, and evergreen trees. The grasslands would typically be on loamy soils with mild slopes. The oaks cross various terrains but give way to chaparral or sage as slope increase and soil quality changes to types with shallow topsoil on heavily decomposed granite. Higher elevation areas around Pine Mountain contain some stands of evergreen pines. Habitats or biology will be covered on upcoming pages.

I have used the characteristics of terrain or slope to map the Guejito and name areas so that we can refer to recognizable places in further investigations. They are the Northern Highlands, the North Pasture, the Southern Hills, the Southern Pasture, and the San Pasqual Slope. The historic areas of the original land grant and Vineyard are also noted.
